LG Display Achieves Industry-First 100% Dimming Consistency Verification

LG Display has made another groundbreaking advancement in the display technology sector. The company recently announced that its large-sized OLED panels, including those for TVs and monitors, have received the industry’s first “100% dimming consistency” verification from UL Solutions, a global authority in applied safety science.

What is Dimming Consistency?

Dimming consistency measures how effectively a display reproduces content based on its brightness performance. This is tested by reducing the reference area on the screen and checking if the brightness remains consistent. LG Display’s OLED panels maintained the same brightness even as the reference area decreased, achieving a perfect 100% dimming consistency. In contrast, LCD-based panels saw a significant drop in performance, ranging from 83% to as low as 43%.

Why OLED Stands Out

OLED panels emit light at the pixel level, which allows them to maintain brightness and color accuracy even in smaller reference areas. This is crucial for faithfully reproducing content as intended by creators. On the other hand, LCD panels, including the latest RGB Mini LED technology, rely on larger backlight blocks that struggle to maintain color accuracy and brightness, often resulting in the halo effect where light leaks and blurs the image.

Implications for the AI Era

In the age of AI, where high luminance, high resolution, and high color gamut are essential, OLED displays are emerging as the optimal choice. With 100% dimming consistency, OLED technology can deliver the rich and precise visual information generated by AI, making it a superior option for both content creators and consumers.

Future Plans

LG Display is committed to further strengthening its leadership in the large-sized OLED market. The company’s new OLED TV panels feature the proprietary “Primary RGB Tandem 2.0” technology, offering peak luminance of up to 4,500 nits and the lowest reflectance level among existing displays.

Hyeon-woo Lee, Head of LG Display’s Large Display Business Unit, remarked, “We have objectively identified why OLED appears brighter and clearer. Through this verification, we can more clearly explain to customers that OLED’s pixel dimming technology, which maintains 100% dimming consistency, is the optimal choice in the AI era.”
